Open Educational Resource: Khan Academy

As someone who has always struggled with math, although it is basic, the most beneficial open educational resource for me has been Khan Academy. Khan is used all over the world as an open educational resource. It helps people learn easily and efficiently through the use of online videos. Its Creative Commons license allows people to retain, reuse, revise, remix, and redistribute materials without much effort, using the 5R criteria outlined by Creative Commons (2025).

We have learned plenty about how beneficial the “whiteboard” method is for students’ learning. Khan does a great job of keeping whatever you’re learning, math, chemistry, or coding, concise and easily comprehensible. From a cognitive load theory perspective, Khan Academy’s short videos reduce extraneous load, helping the overall learning process. Khan has specific videos for a multitude of topics that are straightforward to find through a simple search. I am sure everyone is aware of Khan Academy because many teachers recommend this platform as a tutoring method.

Khan Academy is great because it shows how open educational resources can help learning by making difficult subjects approachable and accessible to everyone. Its Creative Commons licensing is good for learners and educators to use other learning materials. Khan Academy’s visually guided “whiteboard” method supports comprehension and retention through reduced cognitive load. For learners who may struggle with “in-class” instruction, platforms like Khan Academy offer an inclusive and fluid way to build confidence and practice learning at your own pace!
