Theories of Multimedia Learning: The purpose of multimedia learning is to help them learn grasp a concept without making them feel overwhelmed. How a lesson is designed is a key component to making sure every student is engaged and able to remember what they learned.

Mayer’s Cognitive Theory of Multimedia Learning: the 3 ideas!

  • Limited capacity: the brain can only work so hard, so keeping things simple and to the point is crucial.
  • Dual Coding Theory: using both images and words while learning allows for the brain to process two kinds of media; this helps the brain to embed information more easily.
  • Active Processing: the brain retains information by processing it into different categories

Having these ideas while educating can help the educator make sure that every student is benefiting from their lessons!

Cognitive Load: In the eyes of learning, it is the total amount of work and resources your working memory needs to process information and finish a job at any given time. There are 3 main types of cognitive load.

  • Extraneous Load: is distracting and unnecessary information
  • Intrinsic Load: is the difficulty of managing new information
  • Germane Load: is the way the brain connects new information to previously learned information
